Join our research and recording team

Are you interested in history, gardens, buildings, plants, design and people? Then why not join us to research the many different aspects of Devon’s gardens, parks, and other designed landscapes. It’s interesting and rewarding, there is so much to discover. No experience is necessary. We’ll provide training. Work as much or as little as you like, alone or in a group.

Our research helps to determine the significance of a particular landscape, identifying and recording what is important, which can help to conserve special places and promote Devon’s rich garden heritage.

Our six priority sites where we would welcome help are:

Exeter Cathedral Close
Bishop’s Palace Gardens, Exeter
Bishop’s Court, Exeter
Clovelly Court - potential HE Register application
Hannaford Manor, Widecombe in the Moor
Knightstone, Ottery St Mary

Research volunteers meet about every two months often at a site of interest or with associated training. Our volunteers, many of whom began with no historic landscape research experience, have a wide range of skills and interests all of which help to reveal more about the rich history of Devon's parks and gardens. Volunteers may research individual sites, topics or themes, and many contribute articles for the Trust's publications.
