Most counties now have similar but independent Gardens Trusts. The majority belong to The Gardens Trust, which convenes various meetings in order to exchange views, discuss problems and opportunities, and influence policies. A united front is particularly important in any discussion with government. The TGT annual conference and AGM is hosted by different County Gardens Trusts (CGTs) and allows more informal contacts and the chance to taste the garden delights of the host area. Devon has established close links with the other CGTs in the South-West, especially in education work.

The other Devon-wide garden society is Plant Heritage (National Council for the Preservation of Plants and Gardens) Devon branch. There is a clear difference between them and the Devon Gardens Trust, succinctly summed up by the National Secretary of Plant Heritage as "we look after the plants and you look after the gardens". Co-operation takes place over matters of mutual interest.
