VIDEO ARCHIVE
The video recordings that have been made by visitors to Devon over the past few years contain an irreplaceable record of the development of these gardens. However, the quality of the records and even the ability to replay them can deteriorate severely with the passage of time.
We would like to rescue as much as much of this material as possible by transferring the images to CD/DVD. We are starting with VHS records as a pilot project.
Subject to the approval of the garden owners and those individuals supplying material, we hope ultimately to accumulate an archive of records with one disc for each garden of special interest in Devon. These would be offered to the Devon Record Office to house along with our paper archives and be available to approved researchers in the future. Added to any video on each disc would be still photographs and some commentary. Again, subject to the approval of the garden owners and those supplying material, we would hope to give a copy of each disc to the owner of the garden and to those who provided the information.
When you e-mail us please would you give the name of the garden on your tape, its location and the date on which the tape was made. We would then be able to assess the potential importance of the tape. We will always acknowledge your e-mail with our assessment. Where tapes are thought to be significant, we will ask you to send them to us. If you have the means, transfer by e-mail would be ideal, but where this is not possible we will cover the mailing cost involved. After transfer to disc, we will return the tape to you, again covering the cost of mailing.
By participating in this project you will help preserve an important aspect of the heritage of Devon, and hope that you will find personal satisfaction in communicating your records. We know that future researchers will benefit greatly from your help. We are sure that they will appreciate any information that will give them the opportunity to discover how our gardens of special interest have evolved. Thank you for your interest. If you have any ideas about how we can take this project further, we would be pleased to hear from you. Again, please e-mail devon-gardens@btconnect.com.
