Devon Gardens Trust is devoted to the preservation and enhancement of gardens in the UK county of Devon

OUR ACTIVITIES:

Desk and field research.

Surveys of Devon parks and gardens, including exceptional trees.

Visits to public and private gardens, often outside visiting hours and guided by owners.

Assembling archives, mainly garden surveys and photographs.
The majority are deposited at the Devon Record Office but is not on open access.

Maintaining a small library of relevant books and journals.

Using sale catalogues, maps and prints in Devon archives to obtain historical evidence on parks and gardens.

Exploring the possibility of a video archive.

Advising the statutory authorities in Devon and English Heritage on any aspect of Devon gardens when requested. This includes inspecting planning applications.

Assisting researchers interested in topics related to Devon gardens and horticulture.

Giving illustrated lectures to gardening and other societies.
Arranging seminars, workshops and conferences.

Raising the profile of the Trust, distributing membership leaflets and taking part in appropriate events.

Advising owners on garden restoration and working with them when a site is threatened.

Assisting in practical projects and enabling other groups to do so.

Responding to invitations from head teachers and school governors who wish to improve their school grounds.

Actively promoting horticulture as a fulfilling career and gardening as an absorbing interest.

Participating in the national and regional activities of the Association of Gardens Trusts, especially contributing to the Parks and Gardens Database.
