Harry Veitch (1840-1924)
Harry Veitch was the son of James Veitch jnr. born in 1840. He was educated locally at Exeter grammar school before furthering his education in Altona, Hamburg and Vilmorin-Andrieux, Paris. He began work at the Veitchs’ Chelsea Nursery in the late 1850s and commissioned the expeditions of plant collector Richard Pearce. Harry was a key figure in orchid hybridisation; receiving the Victoria Medal of Honour for services to horticulture. He died in 1924 leaving behind wife Louisa Mary, whom he had married in 1867, the couple remained childless.
